I am one of the scholars that came to Singapore in 2009, i was 16 years old at that time.
I am studying in Anglican High which locates near to the Changi international airport of Singapore . Our school which possesses strong infra structures is built on a small hill, surrounding with flourishing trees.
I am living in a students' hostel --- anglican house. There are canteen, study rooms, TV rooms, music room as well as computer rooms. We are provided with 24-hours hot water within each room, micro-wave oven and refrigerator on each floor.
In Singapore , although the teaching language is English, Chinese is also regarded as one of the language they must possess. Most local students got bilingual education since primary school. At first, it was really difficult for us---Chinese scholar, to understand and keep up with the paces of classes, as our English level is as low as the primary three local students. In order to adapt the learning environment more quickly, our school arranged two months English tuition for us. All of us really treasure the opportunity and study very hard.
In January of 2010---the opening of school, we, the Chinese scholar were divided into two classes. My class, 4D, gives me a lot of joys. My teachers and 40 classmates helped me a lot. The Happy Birthday Song on my birthday, the class outing left deep impression in me. I still remember the barbeque in East Coast Park . Friend¡¯s face wreathed in smiles, we were sitting around sharing juicy gossip, smelling the tantalizing aroma emitted from the food. I was so fortunate to be the member of this big warm family.
The daily time routine of Singapore¡¯s secondary school is different. We have continuously four lessons from eight o¡¯clock every weekday, then, we have our break between 10:15 to 11:00. After that, we have lessons till about two o¡¯clock in the afternoon. In the afternoon, sometimes we have Co-Curricular Activities (CCA). We often be acquired to do group work in the classes or after the classes as homework. The teaching aims to build up team spirit and capable leadership among students. They also emphasize the ability of students to use and conduct the knowledge they learned.
My CCA is harmonica, we practice twice a week. It is common things that a local student be able to play at least one musical instrument. I practiced very hard to get the opportunity to take part in the competition between different schools¡¯ cca groups. Despite of CCA, we also need to fulfill the CIP hours. We are required to complete 100 hours of CIP in two years. So what is CIP? CIP is the activities we volunteer to contribute to the social works, such as tidy up books in library. I sold flowers in Valentine¡¯s Day to collect money for the disabled people. I made dumplings and sold in school for charity, I was also the volunteer of the first Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore last year. All of these activities widen my experiences; make my life memorable and wonderful. However, we need to distribute and balance our time of taking part in these activities and studying well. It makes our life in school challenging as well as colourful.
As a sixteen-year-old teenager, it is tough to live without the company of parents. The life in Singapore is brand new as well as strange for us. I was excited about the studying environment abroad; expect a lot of the new life. However fact is always different from the imaginations. Without the company of parents, we need to face a lot of challenges alone. I have cried due to the study pressure, homesick, but I treasure the time I have spent in Singapore as I am growing in the process.
We will never be alone here. In hostel, we---chinese scholars concern about each other. In school, principal, teachers and local classmates help us. On important festivals, we celebrate together. We encourage each other and make progresses together.
The studying in Singapore trains my ability of socializing, practical working as well as independent capability. I gradually become mature and grow up. I experienced a lot and learned a lot. This is the path heading to my success and brighter future. I know I need to work hard continuously and I believe I will be able to walk step by step and eventually achieve my dreams.
