China – Culturally Amazing

From:Shijiazhuang No.42 Secondary School Time:2013-10-29 07:57:34 Read:1163

After living in China for two months, I now understand how the phrase ‘culture shock’ could have been termed.  However, I prefer the term ‘culturally amazing.’  There are so many things that are different in this country than from my own, that I would say that I am not as much shocked as I am amazed.  Yes, there are many idiosyncrasies that many would not understand or ever be able to learn to accept, but to me it is simply amazing.
How can a people drive on roads with not only millions of other cars and pedestrians, but twice as many bicyclists, and have the fewest accidents and incidents of road rage?  How can a country with a population of over a billion and growing, still have more homes than they do people to fill them?  How can a people not only live in a home without an oven, but create such tasty delicacies without one?
And yes, there are many customs and traditions I still personally don’t understand, like not having a school calendar printed and handed out a year in advance, or the concept of personal space on public transportation, but I’m learning to adjust!  There are also so many delightful surprises, like the picturesque parks in the middle of this concrete jungle of a city, or the idea of being able to step out my door and have access to the freshest vegetables possible, that how can anyone who lives here long enough, not be able to appreciate these hidden treasures?
So, true, these last two months have been quite an alteration to the only world that I have ever known, but this beautifully rich country has so much to offer, and I, that much more to learn.  It is culturally amazing.
