Our doors are always open

2008-2009 AFS host families were given a training for the first time by the local Hebei AFS office on September 6th 2008 at No.42 Middle school.
Those attending included the director of local Hebei AFS office and the staff, the teachers in charge of this program coming from No.18, No.25 and No.42 Middle Schools and host family parents and children . We spent a pleasant and meaningful afternoon.
Hebei province received a total of 12 AFS exchange students from 5 different countries for the 2008-2009 school year. These students will enter 12 Chinese families and live with the family members for 10 months to experience more in-depth of life in China and Chinese culture. Host families are all volunteers. They will freely provide warm and comfortable homes which are full of human touch for students from foreign countries.
The local office of Hebei Province issued a handbook of reception and a summary report written by Chinese students who have been in 2007-2008AFS program for each parent at the meeting . According to the National Office Reception manuals and also their reception working experience, the staff of Hebei local AFS office made the handbook very elaborate .
“I was worried about the reception and don’t know how to do it at first , this reception handbook is comprehensive and detailed .The guidance is really timely.” one of the host family parents said happily.Also for the problems that may occur in the reception such as safety, travel, sleeping out, family rules and health, the staff members of the office also gave some suggestions and had a necessary discussion with all the host families. Jiao, a teacher from No. 18 Middle School and Bai ,a teacher from No.25 Middle School, also made a statement at the meeting.
Finally, the director of local Hebei AFS office Zhang Xiuying, who is also the head of the Foreign Affairs Department of No.42 Middle school made a concluding statement. She said ,“The most important thing in the reception is having an ordinary heart. We regard them as our own children and they treat us as their parents. There may be laughter or quarrels. But this is an essential part of the family life.”
Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, the local Hebei AFS office prepared a gift for the host families. As Director Zhang said, "This gift will never be in proportion to the devotion of volunteer families. This is only a heart to show our thanks and our respect.”
The meeting of training was over today , but our work of reception is just beginning . “My doors are always open, ready to embrace you with a hug” , they are not only the words in the song, but also the words each volenteer families want to say .
